What do you think of when you think of a beauty pageant?

Ending world hunger? Big poofy dresses? How about bikini competitions?

Even while major beauty pageants have opened their doors to veterans and homosexual contestants, one thing remains constant: swimsuit competitions.

However, Miss Teen USA has a different idea for our younger competitors. How about replacing bikinis with athleisure? Sounds like that should’ve been changed a while ago, right? Pageant organizers have called it a way to quit exploiting our 51 younger (15-19 years old) competitors and focus more on their physical fitness than their outer beauty. Being fit is beautiful, too.

Plus, many of these girls partake in sports activities in their free time, so wearing it on a stage makes many of them, including softball-playing reigning Miss Teen USA, Katherine Haik.

The pageant organizers hope to begin expressing more of the strong independence that these young grrls possess, “reflect[ing] an important cultural shift”.

It was said that the reaction to the empowering decision was “overwhelmingly positive”, a “smart business move”, and is also very inspiring to young girls who may watch the pageants.

Speaking of which, the Miss Teen USA pageant will be held on July 30th, 2016, so check it out ladies!

Hopefully, the world will take this as a step in the right direction and spread the act, ultimately promoting our young women to feel good while looking active!
