From May 22-23, 2017, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, San Jose, CA, the IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (WIE ILC) was held for the third year in a row. The conference intended to provide “professional women in technology, whether in industry, academia, or government, the opportunity to create communities that fuel innovation, facilitate knowledge sharing and provide support through highly interactive sessions designed to foster discussion and collaboration. WIE ILC focuses on providing leading-edge professional development for mid-level and senior women.”
The conference included 27 speakers, 1300 attendees, and held 38 partners with prestigious organizations such as Intel, Cisco, Verizon, and Amazon. Keynote speakers included Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Executive Director, UN Women; Sallie L. Krawcheck, CEO and Co-Founder of Ellevest and Maria Klawe, President of Harvey Mudd College.
Additionally, while at the conference, attendees were invited to attend a career fair, workshops, a virtual track, and even a pitch competition, which was won by Baby Noggin by Qidza, an app that allows parents to “Easily track your baby’s development milestones at home with fun activities based on scientific discoveries”.
The program ensured its title of “accelerating innovative women who change the world” by providing five different tracks for women to learn by, including Innovation, Empowerment, Executive Leadership, Disruptive Technology, Entrepreneurship, and even Hands-On Workshops over course of the conference.
The 2017 IEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference gave women the tools to “Lead Beyond” and surely accomplished their mission to “inspire, engage and advance women in engineering” through over “700+ affinity groups and 18,500+ members around the world, IEEE Women in Engineering transforms the lives of hundred of thousands of young girls and women around the world through pre-university outreach, technical seminars, humanitarian projects, networking events and educational programs”. Attendees and speakers alike of the 2017 WIE ILC will undoubtedly be making great advancements in technology in the years to come.
