With summer getting into full swing, I thought it might be helpful to have a little guide to what I think are 5 summer wardrobe staples. Please keep in mind that I live in a climate in which it can reach the 90s by noon, but most of these items can be paired with tights or leggings to keep you warm if you live in a cooler climate!
Now, in no particular order, here are my top 5 summer wardrobe staples!
I love denim shorts. They are practically my summer uniform, if I’m not doing anything for which I need to look nice. There are so many different styles, colors, and washes of denim shorts, so there is a perfect pair for every occasion. My preferred way to wear my favorite cut-off denim shorts is just with a t-shirt tucked into them with a belt and some boots. You can, however, dress denim shorts up with a nicer top and some heels.
I live in t-shirts year-round, but summer especially calls for those worn out shirts from vacations past and that shirt from the thrift store that was just too funny and too inexpensive not to get. Dig out that My Chemical Romance concert shirt (that you definitely bought ironically), tuck it into a funky patterned skirt, and rock it!
Lightweight, Light-Colored Dress or Romper
For those times when you have to leave the house in something besides pajamas, a lightweight, light-colored dress or romper is perfect. Easily dressed up or down with footwear and jewelry, a simple dress or romper can be worn casually or for a night out. I have a white sundress that I’ve paired with white sneakers and no jewelry just to hang out with friends, but I’ve also worn it to nice dinners with nude heels, a necklace, and earrings.
These are honestly a year-round staple, and, if you do not own a comfortable pair of somewhat fashionable sneakers at this point, this is the perfect time to go out and find some (pro tip: the little boys’ versions of most shoes like Converse and Adidas are exactly the same as the women’s’ version of the same thing but with a lower price tag!). Sneakers pair perfectly with almost any outfit from a dress to athletic shorts. Personally, my favorite way to wear my sneakers is with a t-shirt and denim shorts.
Sweater or Sweatshirt
I know what you’re thinking. A sweater or sweatshirt is a staple for summer? Of course it is! I am an extremely cold-natured person and, generally, anywhere inside during the summer is blasting air-conditioning. A/C feels so good when you first walk into a store, but, by the time you’ve perused half the store, you’re shivering. This is time during which your sweater or sweatshirt comes in handy! I know this item will not be for everyone, but, for my fellow cold natured grrls out there, this is definitely a piece you want to have around!
