When I was younger, I would watch modern cinematic classics like Phineas and Ferb and Harry Potter. With pretty much every single movie and TV show I would wonder: why are guys always the heroes? I want to be the hero! Being a girl is the worst! It’s not nearly as fun as being a guy – they get to build awesome inventions, and we just have to ruin it for everyone by telling Mom!

Well, no longer! Because I watch way too many TV and movies, I have put together a list of my favorite* modern media that makes me PROUD to be a girl! Enjoy!

*this is a very subjective list as it is only shows and movies that I have seen and thought “wow much empowerment” – I know I didn’t include many, and I am sorry!

Wonder Woman

What, like I wasn’t going to open with this? Let me just tell you: if all guys feel the same way with any superhero movie that I felt after watching this movie, I want to live in their world. I was ready to kill somebody as I walked out of the theater.

Parks and Recreation

Leslie Knope is one cool gal and also should be president and also I love this show.

Mulan saved China. Now China leads the world in exports. You go, Mulan.

Merida is a boss and has inspired a generation of terrible Scottish impressions. That’s all.

Queen of Katwe

Phiona dominated the chessboard and also my heart! This movie deserved way more hype.

Hidden Figures

Obligatory – they solved space.

Girl Rising

Just a warning – this movie is UPSETTING. But all these girls are so strong and amazing and you will cry tears of joy as well as sadness when they share their stories. 10/10 would recommend!

The Help

Viola Davis is in this movie, and she is my idol. Another great movie about women sharing their stories and creating change! Plus the cast is nearly 100% female, which is cool.

This time, Sandra Bullock solves space. Also UPSETTING, but for different reasons, namely space and its existence as a deep empty void where no one except a George Clooney hallucination will help you.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Let’s just talk for a sec about how Kimmy Schmidt basically lost her entire childhood while kidnapped by a delusional cult leader and STILL loves life. What a boss.

Game of Thrones

Yes, there is a lot of sexualization of women in this show. No excuses there. BUT, (spoiler alert) at the moment, the two leaders of opposing armies are both women! Plus Sansa is basically a queen! And Arya is the best murderer in the whole land! Women are rocking Westeros!

30 Rock

Liz Lemon is everything I dream to be. She has a great career, great friends (sometimes), and ends the show with a great family – all without sacrificing who she is. We can have it all – relationships and careers and night cheese! Liz is truly an inspiration.

Anyway, this is my not-very-exhaustive list of female portrayals in the media that make me proud to be a girl. I’m sure I missed many. Thank you for indulging me. Now indulge yourselves and watch a good female-led movie!
