Hey everyone. It’s holiday season again. Although Christmas and accompanying holidays do bring joy and colorful lights to the bleakest of months, they also bring stress, exams, conflict, bitter cold, and general sadness. In an effort to ward off some of these evils, I have compiled a list of things that make me happy. Maybe some of these things will also make you happy! If not, just make your own list, and follow that when you get sad. I guarantee it helps at least a little! Here we go:

  1. That Quicksilver scene from X-Men: Apocalypse set to “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” by Eurythmics
    1. I get it – it’s not a good movie. This scene, though, is possibly the greatest scene ever made in cinematic history ever. Also, it stars Evan Peters, whom I love. Here is the link to the best version (I exhaustively searched the web for many moons to find it for you all): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRR9UiHRAWQ&t=46s
  2. Manchego cheese
    1. It’s the most subtle and understated of the cheeses! Perfect for anybody afraid of strong cheese taste, Manchego cheese is the perfect choice for any cheese plate, to fill any quesadilla that wants to highlight another ingredient, or just by itself. Or, if Manchego is not your cheese of preference, any alternate cheese is also a great happiness booster.
  3. Face masks
    1. I take horrible care of myself. I haven’t eaten a vegetable in months, I get an average of five hours of sleep a night, and I can’t remember the last time I flossed. But hear me now: face masks are amazing. I may die young, but I will die with glowing skin. I have a rule that, while I am wearing a face mask, I am not allowed to do homework, college apps, or anything else remotely stressful or unpleasant. An excellent way to unwind and feel like you’re taking care of yourself even though it’s two in the morning and you have to be up at six-thirty.
  4. A playlist labeled “im sad” on Spotify
    1. I strongly believe everyone should have a sad playlist, to either let her wallow or cheer her up. Very helpful, 10/10.
  5. Crying in the shower
    1. I wouldn’t say this makes me happy so much as it makes me feel less sad? A great purger of emotions. The shower and empty cars are the best places to cry because no one can hear you there, but I have to say the shower just barely eeks into first place because the water washes off all tears immediately and there is less risk of accidentally hitting a mailbox.
  6. Kiwis
    1. Very subjective list item. I love kiwis. Sometimes you just gotta eat four kiwis in a row because they’re so delicious. Go ahead and eat way too much of your favorite food, even if it burns a hole in your stomach on account of too much acid and your weak stomach lining (fun fact I actually ate six kiwis before taking the PSAT and it was so painful, but also worth it).
  7. Naps
    1. I don’t even need to describe why this makes me happy. Naps are the best and in an ideal world everyone takes eight naps a day and long sleeps at night don’t exist.
  8. Petting my dogs
    1. It’s soothing, even though one is a total attention hog and won’t let the other get any pets.
  9. Reading my favorite book
    1. Wow, what a cliché, you say judgmentally. To which I reply, Hey! Stop. Anyway, personally, my favorite book is a children’s novel about a boy growing up in Long Island during the Vietnam War and reading Shakespeare with his strict teacher and his sister runs away in a VW bug and his friend has a Bar Mitzvah and there are rats and architecture and other stuff happens. It’s called The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt and it’s really good and it makes me happy. Reading your favorite book when you’re sad can really cheer you up (unless it’s like poetry or some downer like War and Peace, then I don’t know what to tell you).
  10. Buzzfeed Tasty videos
    1. They’re calming. Also, cake decorating videos and videos of dominos falling are great for unwinding. Much happy.
  11. Stranger Things
    1. In conclusion, just a good show.
